Glossary
The vocabulary, defined without jargon
The terms that keep coming up around agentic systems and B2B sales, each defined in a few sentences. Where a guide goes deeper, the entry links to it.
The system
- AI agent
- A program that pursues a goal by choosing its own steps: it reads a context, decides on an action, observes the result, and goes again. What separates it from an automation script is that decision loop: the script runs a predefined path, the agent picks its own. An agent alone is just an executor; being part of a system is what makes it useful. Our AI agents
- Agentic system
- A set of agents, rules, and checkpoints organized to take on a piece of work end to end, under human supervision. The system coordinates what each agent does, keeps the memory of context, and surfaces to the human only the decisions that require judgment. It is the right unit to judge a product by: an agent is evaluated in a demo, a system by what happens during a week without you.How to spot a real agentic system
- Agentic AI
- The most used label of the moment, and the least precise: it covers everything from an AI feature bolted onto a classic tool to a complete system. The term states an intention, not an architecture. To settle it, look at who triggers the work and who feeds the machine: if the answer is you, the AI was layered on top of a tool.Agentic AI vs agentic system
- Agent orchestration
- The coordination of several agents on one piece of work: who does what, in what order, with what data, and what happens when a step fails. It is the invisible, decisive part of an agentic system: without orchestration, agents placed side by side produce results placed side by side. The integrated agentic system
- Supervision
- The model where the system operates continuously and a human holds a checkpoint nothing can route around: whatever commits the company waits for approval. Distinct from monitoring, which demands constant watching. Well-designed supervision only calls on the human at the moments that require judgment: autonomy is not the absence of a human, it is the absence of pointless human operation.SalesWatch vs autonomous AI SDRs
The human in the loop
- Human approval
- The checkpoint where an action prepared by the system waits for a human decision before executing. Done well, it covers complete proposals that can be judged in minutes, not technical fragments. It is what makes an agentic system compatible with actions that commit the company.Approved campaigns in SalesWatch
- Handoff
- The moment work changes hands between the system and the human, in either direction. A good handoff carries the context along with the work: whoever picks it up does not have to reconstruct what happened before them. It is one of the places where you can tell a designed system from a pile of adjacent tools. The integrated agentic system
- Agentic inbox
- The single surface where an agentic system converges everything that requires human judgment: approvals, conversations, course decisions. The sorting rule fits in one sentence: what requires no judgment never surfaces. It is the natural interface of the supervised model, where a dashboard assumes you will come consult it.The agentic inbox
The signals
- Business signal
- An observable event at an account that opens an opportunity for a sales conversation: an appointment, a funding round, a telling hire, an announcement. It precedes buying intent and does not guarantee it: it is a dated reason to reach out, not a promise of a contract.B2B buying signals
- Buying signal
- Evidence that an account has entered a buying motion: active research, comparison reading, vendor outreach. Rarer and later than the business signal: by the time it becomes visible, your competitors have often seen it too.B2B buying signals
- Intent data
- Aggregated behavioral data (reads, searches, visits) sold as evidence that an account is interested in a topic. Useful as a trend, fragile as a single data point: it says an account is warming up, rarely why, and never exactly who. Treat it as one signal among others, not as an oracle.Detecting buying signals
- Named accounts
- A sales perimeter defined account by account, as opposed to a market addressed in volume. Named-account work favors depth: knowing each account, detecting its approach windows, maintaining the relationship over time. It is the natural terrain of complex B2B sales.
The tool ecosystem
- Sales intelligence
- The data layer of selling: contact databases, enrichment, technographics, event feeds. It answers the question of what is known and leaves the question of what to do entirely open: the data is delivered, the operating remains to be done.Sales intelligence or agentic system
- GTM engineering
- The craft of assembling and operating your own sales machine from specialized tools wired together. Powerful when a skilled operator makes it their day job; expensive in human time otherwise. It is the honest alternative to the integrated system.GTM engineering or agentic system
- Sequencer
- The tool that industrialized outbound messaging: cadences, automatic follow-ups, merge fields. It assumes the list is built and the message written, and considers its job done at send time. Excellent within that perimeter; the real question is everything left to do around it.SalesWatch vs sequencing tools
- Autonomous AI SDR
- An agent that prospects without human approval: it picks targets, writes, sends, and replies on its own. The bet is speed through the removal of control; the cost is that mistakes become public and carry your name. The alternative is the supervised model, where preparation is automatic and engagement is approved.SalesWatch vs autonomous AI SDRs
To go beyond definitions, the HNTIC guides cover each of these topics in depth. This glossary is published by HNTIC, which builds agentic systems for the enterprise, including SalesWatch.
